I've written before about American exceptionalism and what it is exactly. It's the commitment to personal, individual liberty, based on the central idea that our rights are not bestowed by government, but come from "the creator." Whatever creator you believe in.
Today was the roll call of states at the Republican Convention to nominate Mitt Romney for president. Romney has already nameed Paul Ryan (one of my favorite people) as his running mate.
I watched the convention today -- the roll call my favorite part, though those pesky newspeople kept cutting in when I wanted to hear the states brag about their unique resources, history, and commitment to American freedom.
Ann Romney's speech was very nice. I like her. She has a real upfront-ness about her. No BS. I suppose anyone who raised five sons, survived breast cancer and is living with multiple sclerosis doesn't have a lot of tolerance for the "small stuff." She was very good.
I liked Chris Christie, too, Republican governor of New Jersey, a very democrat state, and known for his, shall we say, frankness. He was suggested for VP with Romney, but I don't know that Christie's style would work well much past central Pennsyvania. He can be abrasive. Anyway, a few people have criticized his speech for being too much about himself and too little about Romney. But he was keynoting for the whole convention, and he made a very compelling point.
He talked about what America has brought to the human banquet table, you might say. The idea of individual liberty, protected by law. And how that comes with a lot of personal discomfort as well -- mainly the requirement to make your own way in the world. Because that's what freedom is: making your own way in the world. It isn't easy at all. It isn't without pain, confusion, faillure, times of despair. But America also never holds failure or despair against you, as long as you eventually snap out of it.
One thing I loved about Christie's speech was he said his mother always told him to "Be who you are." And then he applied that to the USA, the free, the restless entrepreneurial, the courageous -- facing every day with the firm hope, even confidence, that you'll get through it and even make it your day.
We don't understand Obama. We don't "get" the socialist message. We don't hate rich people. We don't resent success. I'm sure some people do, but it's really not a significant feature of the American character. Instead, we're ambitious, hungry, innovative, and extremely generous -- especially with moral support -- all the "Atta boys" and "Way to go's" you get when you talk to just anybody about your aspirations.
We admire success, and collect success stories, and want to be rich -- at least rich enough to be as comfortable as we need to be.
Americans also despise people who don't/won't work. Always have. Ever read Uncle Tom's Cabin? The yankees had nothing but contempt for the planters, who dumped all the hard work on the backs of their slaves. It's this distinctively yankee thing. Work is good for you. Work provides you a sense of fulfillment, self-assurance, and individual purpose. If you don't work... well, you suffer the consequences.
That is so deeply engrained in the American culture. It also is the source of the infamous -- and in some places intolerable -- American optimism. "Yeah, so your dog died and your horse ran away. Your wife took off with the traveling salesman. Look at this way, now you start over and do it right." Or, more simply said by Scarlett O'Hara: "Tomiorrow is another day."
Anyway, Christie says, as his mom told him, what America needs to do, after recent years of trying on someone else's culture, what America needs to do is "Be who you are."
Work. Create things. Sell things, Dream. Pile up huge amounts of wealth.
Don't let anything stand in your way.

Democrats borrow propaganda tactics from nazis
Anyone who's worked in public relations or advertising, from my generation anyway, has to be somewhat familiar with how Hitler won an election in an "enlightened and cultivated" Germany. And how the Nazis managed to convince the public at large that all their problems were the fault of Jews, so it was OK to round them up and exterminate them.
The really, really shocking thing is... the nazi propaganda tactics worked. On a largely educated and sophisticated population. The same culture that had produced Einstein and Scubert, among dozens of others.
But what the democrats are doing in the current presidential campaign very literally takes a page out of Goebbel's play book. Goebbels, by the way, was the popeyed, chinless wonder who was in charge of nazi propaganda. (One description of him noted, "He looked like he'd just been goosed.") Not so sure he invented the propaganda techniques. I doubt he had the brains or imagination. After all, he was a nazi.
I've mentioned this before, but the "Big Lie" was one of the nazis' favorite things. You make up a real outrageous whopper. Many people probably won't believe it, or not the face of it as literal fact. However, it plants suspicions. Like, "Where there's that much smoke, there must be a fire." Or people just couldn't believe that someone as friendly and community-spirited as "Uncle Addie" would make up and spread such nasty rumors. I mean, good ol' Adolf was "one of us," he defended the workers, and was here to help us.
The opposition might try to fend off the verbal assauts, but then they're on the defensive, you know. I mean, by tis time, you wouldn't expect them to admit to anything. And if the perpetrators of the lies for some reason had to retract or "walk back" any of their "stories," as The Comrade would say, the damage has already been done. The filth tends to stick to its target somehow.
But Mitt Romney as a wild-eyed, bloodthirsty, heartless plutocrat? I don't know, I just can't see it. He has that sweet smile, you know. If he was as fiery and pitiless as the democrats suggest, he probably would have won the 2008 presidential election, no?
A lot of this published dem garbage -- like poor Joe Soptic, whose wife died 10 years after Joe and his company had any remote connection to Bain Capital -- is fabricated to demonize the opposition. And poor pathetic Joe is being exploited, apparently. He can't seem to come to grips with the fact that 1.) there wasn't anything he could do to save his wife; and 2.) that she should have gone to the doctor a lot sooner, while she was still working and had her own insurance -- which she did have, long after Joe's company closed.
I don't quite understand how Mitt Romney is supposed to be involved in that situation. First, Romney was no longer at Bain Capital when Joe's company was closed. Second, the company was closed five or six years before Joe's wife died. Bain had kept the company operating for five or six years before it shut down -- as part of a larger industry trend, by the way.
This particular Big Lie, like most others, is pretty much an insult to human intelligence. But it serves the larger purpose of nazi-like Big Lie propaganda -- to find a target you can demonize, someone you can blame for all the trouble in the world. Then lead the slavering pack to tear them apart and declare yourself a hero.
This is what the nazis did to the Jews -- and really, any political opponent. Something like 6 million Jews were killed by the nazis. But something like 11 million were exterminated all together at the death camps. These others were professors and other intellectuals who disagreed with der Furer. People with mental disorders -- or what were perceived to be mental disorders. People "suspected" of things like collaborating wtih the enemy -- ratted out by brown-nosing neighbors. And a lot of those who died were simply imported slave labor when the supply of Jews began running short. After all, the nazis were the master race; everyone else lived only to serve them.
And by the way, Hitler -- I mean Comrade Obama -- has more than once appealed to the public to report their friends and neighbors who criticize Obamacare, and now apparently he's also recruiting them to do something for his campaign. Can't remember what. This ratting on your neighbors thing was a tactic routinely used by nazis. And it got worse as they went along. Like if you wouldn't rat somone out, they'd kill members of your family and your friends until you either made something up or accepted a bullet yourself.
I think the Comrade, Axelrod, David Fluff, Stephanie Cutter, Valerie Jaret, Jay Carneybarker, Robert Gibbs, and the rest all are probably much more familiar with Mein Kampf than with the US Constitution. But that's just my own opinion. You can/should make up your own mind.
The thing is... what happened in Germany is happening right here, right now. Not necessarily in terms of targeting Jews (although there is a bit of that in the mix), but to overthrow the US government and make it the Comrade's private little kingdom. Not just for himsely, you understand. He's trying to create the marxist utopia. He thinks that's a good thing. Apparently he's never examined its failed experiments too closely.
And if you wonder "How could the Germans elect someone like Hitler?" look around you. After all, Germany had been something of a haven for Jews fleeing persecution in Russia and Poland. And the Germans had had Beethoven, Goethe, etc. etc. A very high culture. Very highly educated, polite and refined. And still, they swallowed Hitler's crap, held their noses and elected him. And then goose-stepped after him across Europe, raping, killing, looting.
If you like the Comrade -- maybe you can explain the attraction to me. I mean, seriously, what the hell are you thinking?

Occupy Wall St. folks turning on the White House
Just heard a little news flash out of Oakland, California, I believe. And I'm rolling on the floor, laughing, coffee shooting out my nose. (Yeah, I drink coffee after midnight. Go figure.)
Anyway, I always figured the Occupy Wall Street crowd was the Comrade's version of Hitler's Brown Shirts, the "Sturmabteilung," the "SA," or the "Assault Divison." Ol' Addie recruited the Brown Shirts from the dregs of German society starting as early as 1921. They became the "enforcers" of the Nazi Party as it rose to power. Because if you heckled Hitler or mocked or questioned the Nazis, the Brown Shirts would probably break your nose, if you were lucky to get off so light. They were sort of a domestic terrorist group, tasked with actually conducting the Nazi revolution.
Well, Ernst Rohm, head of the Brown Shirts, took his job probably more seriously than Hitler wanted him to. Sources say at one time, there were maybe 2 million Brown Shirts and/or fellow travelers in Germany. I mean, why not? Someone crosses you, beat him up. The brown shirt gave you license. But Rohm got ambitious. He wanted to recruit enough followers to challenge the German miltary and to outnumber the Nazi Party. Might makes right, see? That was, after all, their operating principle.
So Hitler, being political, but probably too crazy to be really successful at it, finally recognized that Rohm and the Brown Shirts were becoming a threat to him. He had the Brown Shirt leadership -- about 70 people -- massacred on what's known as The Night of the Long Knives. And that was the end of that.
Hitler had more success in controlling the SS, the Black Shirts, who became his intelligence agency and not-so-secret police throughout his brief but impactful career as a power mad maniac and general threat to the human race in the 1930s and 1940s. The SS knew its place and happily remained on Hitler's coattails.
At any rate, anyone else see the parallels here? The Occupy Wall Street people -- whom I aptly refer to as the OWies -- have been recruited from the dregs of US society. Sure, there's a bunch of misguided and very naive college kids in the mix, but mosly loonie-toons communists, mentally ill homeless, criminals, and progressive blockheads -- that is, progessives who latch themselves onto anything that looks ragged and dirty and smells. The kind of crowd that many Hollywood stars regard as the pathetic (and blameless) poor who need the helping hand of enormous government.
So anyhow, back to the news story. Apparently a gang of roving Owies smashed the big storefront windows of Obama's campaign headquarters in Oakland. They also seem to have wandered along related streets smashing car windows.
And here I thought Comrade Obama was their Savior.
How long before Van Jones and other OWie leaders -- if you can identify them beneath their layers of filth -- end up somehow "disappeared," to borrow a word from the political purges of certain South American dictatorships. If they keep up their violent antics, they become just a huge embarrassment to the jerk in the White House and other progressives, like Pazzo Pelosi, who also promotes their "cause," whatever that might be. (I haven't quite figured that out yet.)
Somehow the OWies, like the Brown Shirts, being who they are, just can't help but bite the hand that's trying to feed them. Why, the ungrateful snots!! The liberals and progressives let them live in makeshift tents and cardboard boxes on public thorofares, let them bang their little drums and smoke dope all night without police harrassment, and they attack the president? I'm shocked, shocked....
I guess Obama, like Hitler, just doesn't love them enough.

Harry Reid is a horse's ass -- but we knew that
I wasn't going to write anything unless it was positive. Yes, I too, am sick of the whining. But this is just absurd.
Apparently Horse's Ass Harry Reid -- I mean Senate Majority Leader Brain-dead Harry Reid -- is trying out the Chicago-style politics "whisper campaign" thing, where you start a rumor to blacken your opponent's name. Usually this is done subrosa, a pretended "confidential" or "insider" bit of juicy gossip that gets passed around and stirs up doubt and raises suspicions. But no, ol' Brain-dead utilizes the floor of the U.S. Senate to launch his whisper campaign.
He's announced twice, from the floor of the Senate, that Mitt Romney hasn't paid any taxes for the last 10 years. Brain-dead claims that "he's heard," but he names no sources, that that's the truth, and that it's Mitt Romney's reponsibility to set the record straight.
What bullshit.
The democrats persist in a couple of bogus ideas. First, that no one in America knows that Mitt Romney is rich. Second, that it's evil to be rich.
Well, we all know, Mitt Romney is rich. And you know what? It's not evil to be rich. I wish I was rich. I'm working at it. Have been since I was old enough to work, and it hasn't panned out for me so far. But more power to Romney -- he got into a lucrative field and made the most of it. Maybe he could give me a job.
Regarding his tax filings -- personally, my dear, I don't give a damn.
What I'd be interested in finding out, though, is: Who paid for the Comrade's Harvard education? Where are his transcripts? How come no one admits to knowing him until he came to Chicago and got real tight with aging radicals?
I know a few people who consider Comrade Obama the "Manchurian Candidate." Know what I mean?
Where's your papers, Comrade? Why so hush-hush? What are you hiding? What are you ashamed of? For pity sake, it took like three years before he admitted to having a birth certficate. How lame is that?

The 1st Amendment under fire from democrats
Interesting coincidence over the weekend. Ater watching hours of coverage about the "Movie Massacre" in Colorado, I started looking for something a little lighter. Ended up watching an interview on CNN, Piers Morgan talking to Supreme Court Justic Antonin Scalia, who's just published a book called Reading Law, with a co-author whose name escapes me. The co-author also participated in the interview.
Scalia takes a conservative view of the U.S. Constituion. He was appointed by Ronald Reagan, and seems healthy enough to remain at his post for a while yet.
I didn't see the whole interview, but at one point, Piers Morgan seemed to be trying to define how Scalia -- and other judges -- draw the line between their personal attitudes and their interpretations of the Constitution. Morgan seemed to regard "torture" as synonymous with "cruel and unusual punishment," the latter banned by the Constitution. Scalia noted that "torture" isn't necessarily "punishment." Punishment comes after conviction of a crime; tortue, maybe not.
Morgan asked Scalia if he'd made an decisions that disagreed with his personal views. One biggie was about the issue of burning the U.S. flag. Scalia said, "If I were king" flag-burners would go to jail. However, as a Supreme, he voted that flag-burning is a legitimate expression of political views, and therefore it's protected under the 1st Amendment.
So then today I'm watching I think it was "Fox Media Watch," which discusses bias in the media, among other media-related stuff. Someone brought up the issue of disclosure. That is, the democrats are getting all flustered and demanding about the Republicans disclosing exactly who is donating money to the Romney campaign. I should add, much of this has been disclosed already -- the big donors, anyway.
Among these big donors is Frank L. Vandersloot, founder of a company called Melaleuca Inc., which sells vitamins and cleaning products much the way Avon or Amway does -- through its sales agents setting up their own "pyramid" sales organizations. Vandersloot has donated $1 million or more to Romney, and even serves as an officer in a Romney superpac fundraising organization.
Oddly enough, over the last few months, Vandersloot has been fingered for an IRS audit, and the Labor Dept. is also looking into his employing three Mexicans every year for the last five years as hands at his ranch in Idaho.
Vandersloot has been investigated before. It's the pyramid-style sales organization of Melaleuca. Those kinds of things can make a lot of people unhappy. They may be pressured to join one or another sales reps' groups, they may find the product a lot more difficult to sell than they suspected. Who knows, they may have legitimate complaints about their dashed expectations.
At any rate, Vandersloot is in a position to be regarded as "low-hanging fruit" by an organization like the Chicago branch of the democratic party, which tends to use less than admirable tactics itself to get its own way. So they're attacking Vandersloot -- and using the might of the federal government to do it.
I suspect this is why the democrats want disclosure of Romney's donors -- so they can sic the IRS on them and God knows what other agencies and dirty tricks practitioners who don't give a damn about the United States or what it stands for. "Just give me my plum." Or, in this case, my $5 million for a shell corporation that will go bankrupt, at taxpayer expense. That's got "Chicago" written all over it.
Of course, as I recall, Bill Clinton tried something like this, too, but he was called out on it publicly and it seemed to stop.
Interesting contrast, though, between conservative Scalia defending the Constitution even when he doesn't agree with it, and the Comrade and his merry marxists burying a Republican donor under federal investigations in efforts to create a "chilling effect." We'll see if anything like ethics or a sense of honor stops the Comrade from pushing this any further. Actually, from what I've seen of him so far -- and from what I know about Chicago -- I doubt it.

Scalia takes a conservative view of the U.S. Constituion. He was appointed by Ronald Reagan, and seems healthy enough to remain at his post for a while yet.
I didn't see the whole interview, but at one point, Piers Morgan seemed to be trying to define how Scalia -- and other judges -- draw the line between their personal attitudes and their interpretations of the Constitution. Morgan seemed to regard "torture" as synonymous with "cruel and unusual punishment," the latter banned by the Constitution. Scalia noted that "torture" isn't necessarily "punishment." Punishment comes after conviction of a crime; tortue, maybe not.
Morgan asked Scalia if he'd made an decisions that disagreed with his personal views. One biggie was about the issue of burning the U.S. flag. Scalia said, "If I were king" flag-burners would go to jail. However, as a Supreme, he voted that flag-burning is a legitimate expression of political views, and therefore it's protected under the 1st Amendment.
So then today I'm watching I think it was "Fox Media Watch," which discusses bias in the media, among other media-related stuff. Someone brought up the issue of disclosure. That is, the democrats are getting all flustered and demanding about the Republicans disclosing exactly who is donating money to the Romney campaign. I should add, much of this has been disclosed already -- the big donors, anyway.
Among these big donors is Frank L. Vandersloot, founder of a company called Melaleuca Inc., which sells vitamins and cleaning products much the way Avon or Amway does -- through its sales agents setting up their own "pyramid" sales organizations. Vandersloot has donated $1 million or more to Romney, and even serves as an officer in a Romney superpac fundraising organization.
Oddly enough, over the last few months, Vandersloot has been fingered for an IRS audit, and the Labor Dept. is also looking into his employing three Mexicans every year for the last five years as hands at his ranch in Idaho.
Vandersloot has been investigated before. It's the pyramid-style sales organization of Melaleuca. Those kinds of things can make a lot of people unhappy. They may be pressured to join one or another sales reps' groups, they may find the product a lot more difficult to sell than they suspected. Who knows, they may have legitimate complaints about their dashed expectations.
At any rate, Vandersloot is in a position to be regarded as "low-hanging fruit" by an organization like the Chicago branch of the democratic party, which tends to use less than admirable tactics itself to get its own way. So they're attacking Vandersloot -- and using the might of the federal government to do it.
I suspect this is why the democrats want disclosure of Romney's donors -- so they can sic the IRS on them and God knows what other agencies and dirty tricks practitioners who don't give a damn about the United States or what it stands for. "Just give me my plum." Or, in this case, my $5 million for a shell corporation that will go bankrupt, at taxpayer expense. That's got "Chicago" written all over it.
Of course, as I recall, Bill Clinton tried something like this, too, but he was called out on it publicly and it seemed to stop.
Interesting contrast, though, between conservative Scalia defending the Constitution even when he doesn't agree with it, and the Comrade and his merry marxists burying a Republican donor under federal investigations in efforts to create a "chilling effect." And where was Batman?
Kinda late, and just hearing the first reports of a maniac shooting spree at the midnight premiers of the movie, Dark Knight Rising, the latest in the Batman series. At this moment, reports are 10 to 12 people dead -- including a baby shot at point blank range -- and at least 20 wounded.
Apparently at Batman's first appearance in the film, two guys in body armor and gas masks stood up and start shooting. Witnesses say the weapons were "long" and military-style (that could be anything), sounded like they were automatic or semi-automatic. The perps also lobbed some tear gas into the crowd. The first shooter has been apprehended, and the cops are still searching the theater for the second shooter.
Pretty heavy duty weapons and outfitting, but apparently available to anyone who really wants them -- and I'm talking more about the body armor and gas masks than the weapons. Though I have no idea where one would buy tear gas.
The theater was packed -- totally sold out.
Many of the victims were teenagers and even younger children, because that age group made up most of the audience.
This is insane, and makes me wonder what the hell goes on in Colorado. Remember Columbine?
Nobody knows anything about it yet, in terms of motivation, if it had anything at all to do with Batman, or if the theater was attractive just because there was a crowd there.
So sorry for the families. For Aurora, Colorado, in general.

He triggered the tear gas before he started shootng -- randomly into the audience. Apparently he had no particular target. He told police he also has "incendiary devices" in his car -- in the lot outside the theater -- and in his home. Police are seaching.
New body counts, too -- 14 dead. 50 wounded and there may be more.

Presidential meltdown
Pretty early in the campaign for the Comrade to be losing it. But I guess if all you've done for the past four years is live in a big housr (free of charge) with as many servants as you want, and play golf and basketball (and you can even call up pros and ask them to come and shoot a few with you), and then periodically take trips around the world in your own luxury jet, and bring your friends, and all your wife's friends, and even bring your dog in a second jet... well, maybe the Comrade's gotten just a little soft.
He was speaking in Virginia, I believe, over the weekend, when he apparently got "off the teleprompter" and started yelling about how business people don't build their own businesses. No, it was the government. Same for the Internet. The Internet has nothing to do with the private sector. It was all based on "government research." Whatever that means.
So my question is, where's my business? Why hasn't government given me a business?
With such a view, I can see why the Comrade promotes class warfare so vehemently. I mean, I never got a business from the government, but it seems like everyone else has. And, what? Does the government save the really big businesses, like GE or GM, for its special friends and supports.
Well, yeah.. looks that way, doesn't it?
To be honest, though, and serious, the blunder, or misspeak, or whatever you want to call it --unguarded moment?? -- sort of reveals either the Comrade's personal opinion -- that the federal government REALLY IS Santa Claus -- or it's a crude statement of the bullshit he wants us to believe.
But you know, I suspect wherever he goes, there's always somebody in the audience who's owned and run their own business. For the Comrade to tell them that goverment built their business is kind of a really sharp slap across the face. Not a way to win friends and influence people, is it?
Whateve happened the "silver-tongued devil?" With desperation knocking, he's completely falling apart. And the campaign hasn't even really started yet.
